Girls’ Volleyball Advances to Next Round of NCS

By Staff Writer Hannah Chou

Girls’ Volleyball traveled to Deer Valley High School, located in Antioch, California, on November 1 to play their first match of North Coast Section (NCS). After an intense game, MSJ defeated the  Blossom Valley Athletic League champions, Deer Valley, in four sets with scores of 25-23, 25-22, 18-25, and 25-18.

At the beginning of each of the four sets, Deer Valley dominated the court with their loud cheers from both the players and home crowd, but MSJ managed to push through and win the first, second, and fourth sets. In the third set, the Deer Valley team unexpectedly came in with more intensity and won 18-25, but despite the loss,  MSJ defeated Deer Valley in the fourth set with a score of 25-18. Spikes from Outside Hitter Junior Michelle Zhang, sets from Setter Senior Cynthia Zhang, digs from Libero Senior Connie Chou, along with the energy and cheers from the entire team helped MSJ emerge victorious and advance to the next round of NCS.

According to Captains Seniors Isis Chu and Aileen Hsu, the highlight of the game was the team’s consistency. “All the numerous executions and all the rallies that we fought really hard in [were] the overall highlight [of the game],” said Hsu. “It wasn’t our big kills or anything, just our overall consistency.”

Varsity Head Coach Donald Hui believes that the players need to work on being more assertive to prepare themselves for the next NCS match against James Logan High School, the undefeated champions of Mission Valley Athletic League. He said, “We tend to be hesitant with things that we do. We have all the tools, but until we are one hundred percent committed to what we do, we’re not gonna fully utilize our talent.”

Their next NCS match on November 5 at James Logan High School will determine whether or not Girls’ Volleyball advances to the third round of NCS for the first time in the team’s history.
