Skincare for Summer!

By: Hannah Shih

You only get one body, so take care of it the best you can! Protect your skin from the harsh UV rays of summer with these effective and highly recommended products!

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 55: $7.04 at Target

This is a water resistant sunscreen lotion that has topped dermatologists’ lists for years. If you hate the oiliness and thickness of traditional sunscreen, this product is for you due to its noncomedogenic and mattifying formula.

Aveeno Continuous Protection Active Sunblock Spray SPF 30: $8.97 at Walmart

Despite how absorbent the Neutrogena sunblock is, spray sunblocks are often lighter and more convenient than their lotion counterparts. This spray is efficient and affordable though the drawback of spray sunscreens is that full coverage is difficult to achieve. It is best to spray it into your palms first, and then rub it generously into your skin to ensure that every inch is covered, especially along the edges of your bathing suit.

While protecting your skin is important, don’t  forget about your lips!

Lipbalms with SPF:

Aveeno Essential Moisture Lip Conditioner SPF 15: $2.58 at Walgreens

This shea butter, jojoba oil, and natural oatmeal containing lipbalm both moisturizes and protects lips from the sun. Two important functions for the price and ease of one! It even contains both UVA and UVB sunscreens.

However, if UV rays do still manage to harm your skin, you can perform damage control with the following products.

Sunburn healers:

Banana Boat After Sun Aloe Vera Gel: $4.97 at Walmart

Aloe vera is one of the best remedies for a painful sunburn, and though any form of aloe vera will soothe the tightness and flushing, this product is especially made to cool and heal your skin. Use it three or four times a day to achieve fast recovery.

Is applying makeup and sunscreen a pain? Sunscreen must be reapplied every two or three hours, and every time your makeup must be used once again over it. Instead of carrying around all these cumbersome products, use these SPF included makeup products.

Portable Makeup Products:

Bare Minerals SPF 30 Natural Sunscreen: $28.00 at Bare Escentuals

This portable sunscreen comes in a bottle with a brush for easy application. It contains vitamins A, C and E, as well as aloe vera to counteract the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Rimmel London Sexy Curves Waterproof Mascara: $7.50 at Walmart

Summer is all about having fun at the beach and swimming, and makeup shouldn’t be a concern. Thankfully, as long as this mascara is used, makeup smudging is avoidable. This Rimmel waterproof mascara is one of the best out there, and in addition to  its water resistant, it promotes incredible volume and length.

noncomedogenic: doesn’t plug the pores, usually recommended for people prone to acne

mattifying: makes your skin less oily or shiny

UV: ultraviolet radiation that comes from the sun, can burn and harm skin, promoting skin cancer and other diseases

UVA: penetrates to deeper layers of skin, the cause of skin aging and wrinkling

UVB: hurts the upper layers of the skin, causes reddening and sunburn
