San Bruno Ablaze

As San Bruno residents were returning home from work on September 9, a gas explosion ripped through the neighborhoods of Clairmont and Glenview. The massive explosion resulted in a fire that destroyed 37 homes as it raged uncontrolled for over an hour until Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) was able to shut off the gas line feeding the blaze.

Current death tolls are disputed although the official toll is four fatalities. However the San Bruno Fire Chief and other sources have reported up to seven fatalities and six missing persons. Temporary shelters have been set up across the city for those affected by the fire. Due to the massive outpouring of community support, The Red Cross is asking for cash donations instead of food or clothing for the victims. There is also an immediate need for type O-Negative blood donations to help burn victims. Donations can be made by calling 1-888-4-HELP-BAY or visiting www.redcrossbayarea.org/donate.
