Senior Cham Yu is a 2026-27 News Editor. He is a third-year journalist at the Smoke Signal. Moving from Hong Kong to California when he was 11, Cham is an urban development activist and leads initiatives for affordable housing. He is passionate about the intersection of applied linguistics and policy, where choices about language determine who can participate in politics, and how policies on language affect its survival. On campus, you can find Cham lecturing about rhetoric in Mock Trial, discussing diplomacy in Model United Nations, developing arguments in Speech and Debate, and spotlighting women-owned businesses in Exit Zine—MSJ’s only feminist publication. Cham is also a classical cellist and enjoys biking and cooking in his free time.
