Fremont community on alert following federal immigration enforcement in the Sundale area

Immigration enforcement officers conducted “Knock and Talk” operations in Fremont on the morning of November 8, maneuvering around in unmarked vehicles. From early morning to around 9:50 a.m., agents sought voluntary cooperation from specific individuals by knocking on doors primarily in the Sundale area. As of Saturday night, no overt information concerning what branch of enforcement they were from or whether officials made any detentions or arrests had been shared, and Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan had not received direct contact from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Prior to the enforcement action, Fremont Police Department officials were notified of federal immigration enforcement at around 7 a.m.; however, details on the number of agents and their whereabouts remained scant. The November 8 operations followed President Trump’s mobilization of troops on October 21, during which he deployed more than 100 federal immigration agents to the Bay Area. Although the administration soon called off the immigration enforcement raid, citizens across the nation have publicly expressed their dissent against Trump’s directives. Through active protests, including the No Kings Demonstration in Fremont, local residents have denounced the trend of increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement. Amidst the rising tension in immigrant communities, Fremont Police Department Chief Sean Washington reassured the public of their commitment to safety and legality in a press statement responding to concerns about Saturday’s enforcement action. “We understand the concerns of our local community members. The Fremont Police Department will continue to align with state law, policy, and established community service objectives,” Washington said.
