At the February 12 FUSD Board of Education meeting, the trustees unanimously approved Former Superintendent Erik Burmeister’s resignation, effective immediately. The board held a special meeting on February 14 to discuss the matter and has begun searching for an interim, or regular replacement. The cause of Burmeister’s abrupt resignation, after only seven months as superintendent, is currently unknown. However, occurring during a tumultuous time for the district — amid an impasse on the negotiations with FUDTA and a $30 million budget deficit — Burmeister’s resignation will likely have significant implications. The Smoke Signal will publish updates on the story as it continues to develop.
