Local — Shooting in Union City Left One Dead
Officers arrested three suspects for a triple shooting that left one dead in Union City on the night of November 28. Shots were fired at a black Lexus SUV at around 9 p.m. in the parking lot of the Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Union Landing Shopping Center. Officers quickly responded and found two victims with bullet wounds lying in the parking lot; one of whom was dead and the other in serious condition. Officers found three suspects a block from the shooting in a getaway car with a handgun and other evidence, and brought them into custody. During the arrest, the police stopped another car speeding off and found the third shooting victim in the vehicle. Detectives are currently investigating the case but they do not think there is any public threat.

 

National — Officials to Close Dakota Access Pipeline Protest Camp
North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple mandated an evacuation of Dakota Access Pipeline protesters on November 28, but there are no plans for forcible removal. Federal officials stated on November 25 that they will close the campsite where demonstrators have been protesting the construction of the crude oil pipeline in North Dakota. The Army Corps of Engineers said they made the decision to protect the public from violent confrontations between protesters and law enforcement. Although any protesters north of the Cannonball River will be charged with trespassing starting December 5, officials established a free speech zone south of the Cannonball River.

 

International — Fidel Castro Dies at 90
Fidel Castro, once known as Prime Minister and President of Cuba, died on November 25 at age 90. Cuba officially declared nine days of mourning to honor its former leader. In the capital city of Havana, a 21-gun salute honored his passing, and a memorial with photos, writings, medals, and flowers was set up in Revolution Square. People formed long lines in Revolution Square to pay their respects, and a public mass was held there on November 29. President Barack Obama released a public statement on November 26 and said, “Today, we offer condolences to Fidel Castro’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Cuban people.”

 

Quirky — Scale to Measure Seismic Activity of Fans
Professors at Ohio State University and Miami University collaborated with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to create a FanQuakes Magnitude Scale, which calculates seismic activity created by fans at the Ohio State University stadium. Sensors around the stadium convert shaking caused by fans into the magnitude of an earthquake. The project was created to help students understand geology concepts and connect what they learn with the real world. Researchers expect a massive response from the scale during an upcoming football game between the University of Michigan and the Ohio State University.
