Low Ticket Sales Lead to Cancellation of Crab Feed

By: Staff Writer Andrew Kan

The Crab Feed Committee and MSJ Boosters Club canceled the 2016 MSJ Crab Feed, an annual MSJ fundraiser, due to low ticket sales.

Crab Feed Committee Chair Andrea Hancock said, “[The reason we canceled the Crab Feed was] maybe a combination of the delay in opening crab season due to a biotoxin in the crabs and just not enough community members supporting the crab feed. Years ago there would be at least 500 people attending.  Last year it was 285.  This year with only two weeks to go we had only sold about 130 tickets.” The decorations and food had not yet been purchased, so there was no monetary loss from dropping this year’s Crab Feed. Baskets already made by organizations will be put up for raffle at this year’s Spring Expo, which will take place on Thursday, May 26 at MSJ.

It is undecided whether or not there will continue to be MSJ Crab Feeds. Hancock said, “Continuing the Crab Feed will be up to the [Crab Feed] committee. It would be great to continue this, but the parents would need to support it. It’s sad because it was a fun community event.” Past Crab Feeds featured all-you-can-eat crab, pasta, and salad, as well as a basket raffle and silent auction.

An email from MSJ Crab Feed was sent out on February 13 notifying those who had already ordered tickets. Tickets can be refunded or donated to a specific MSJ team or group by March 1, 2016 by replying to the email. If there is no email response by the deadline, the buyer’s check will be mailed back to the address on the check.
