MSJ Wins at National History Day State Competition

By: Staff Writer Andrew Chen

On May 8-9, 15 MSJ students attended the National History Day (NHD) State competition after having advanced from the Alameda County competition. The NHD competition, which consists of an approximately 10 minute long interview, is an international history competition in which students compete to create research projects that match an annual theme. These projects consist of papers, historical performances, museum exhibits, documentaries, or websites, all matching this year’s theme: “Leadership and Legacy in History”. Over 600,000 students from around the world compete in NHD contests each year, conducting extensive research on historically significant topics of interest.

Competing among 1,100 participants, the MSJ participants had eight finalists, which include one co-champion and four runner-ups. Co-champion and Junior Katrina Cherk, one of two in her category selected to advance, will be moving on to the National NHD competition from June 14-18 among 3,000 other students from all over the world. The two projects awarded runner-up, one by Junior Anu Asokan and the other by Sophomores Andrew Choi, Christina Di, and Max Wu, have been selected as alternates for the competition.

Descriptions of the winning projects will be added shortly.
