Indiana Juniors Review

Edward the Vampire: As I was lying in the grass, glistening in the sun as I so often do, I was awoken by the deafening roar of cheers to the beginning of the first act of junior’s homecoming skit.

Bella the Beautiful: Did you recognize it? They were singing the a capella version of the Indiana Jones theme song. It was a really original way to start their performances.

EV: The decorations were also amazing, especially the suspended “2013”, but the shadow from the hanging figures really put a damper on my sparkle.

BB: Those were great, but the backdrop and posters on the amphitheatre didn’t meet my expectations. The backdrop was a bit too simple for my taste, and the posters seemed to be sloppily done. It definitely created more work for the stage crew, who also got cheered along with the airbands. The ivy was a nice touch though.

EV: Nice as it was, it, like the posters, it wasn’t secured very well and seemed to interfere with the performances.

BB: The skit was easy to follow, especially with just four main characters. I also liked how the respective themes of each grade were incorporated into each individual’s role.

EV: The actors and the voiceovers were also in sync, and they worked around the cheering rather than pushing forward.

BB: True, but I wish they had explained the sudden appearance of Mission Man better.

EV: I didn’t get it either, but I just read their minds.

BB: But for the rest of us mere mortals, we felt like we were left in the dark.

EV: Speaking of dark, did you get a look at those airband costumes? They all looked the same, black shirts and more black shirts, and some with writing that wasn’t easily read by the audience. And so were the airbands—they all seemed to be hip-hop and nothing else; some variety would have helped.

BB: Same here, but their passion and class spirit made up for it, especially the last airband. Everyone in it was incredibly enthusiastic and in sync with the music, making it really stand out from the airbands.

EV: However, one of the airbands didn’t really show true spirit when they left the stage after a technical difficulty.

BB: They made it really obvious by angrily gesturing at the DJ station, and even more obviously so when they came on to finish their dance later on.

EV: I commend them for coming on to finish their dance, but by doing so, they took away from the effect of the airband after them.

BB: There weren’t smooth transitions between the airbands and the skit though. It made me feel like I was watching a TV show and the airbands were randomly inserted commercials.

EV: Despite all of that, the junior class was incredibly unified. They cheered appropriately and the vast majority of them stood up to show their support for their classmates on stage.

BB: In general, the juniors had a strong performance and we can’t wait to see what they’ll do next year.

EV: Good luck to the senior class of 2012 tomorrow!

  • Your reviews are getting really hard to follow. For the seniors, do the readers a favor and not include random characters like justin bieber or Edward the vampire.
And how do you get the guts to pound on the juniors with critiques all over the place and still say, "In general, the juniors had a strong performance and we can’t wait to see what they’ll do next year." There's a fine line between being nice and plain old irony. And for everyone else, i really don't think the juniors did as bad as the smoke signal made it look. And i'm not a junior.

  • Just saying the boys booty was crazy good. They defintely deserve some recognition instead of just shirts with hard to read phrases on them.

  • As amazing as the Junior performance was, there was something about visiting today that sickened me. When the Smoke Signal's own Mrs. Cohen rampaged through the Senior crowd and tore the papers out of their hands, I was appalled. Despite being rude and harsh, it is the Senior's decision. She was in no position to come parading through and imposing her will. The Smoke Signal is not her PROPERTY and she has no right to take it away. Let the Seniors do what they wish and then lives with those consequences. But NEVER rip something out of a student's hands because you don't agree with it. I am disgusted and I believe that Mrs. Cohen owes Class of 2012 an apology. Horrible behavior by a teacher.

    • One of the many new rules imposed this year includes no taking out newspapers to symbolize boredom. Mr. Larsen was very disappointed in the seniors and Mrs. Cohen definitely had the right to take the papers away from them, as it was a violation of school rules.

    • ARE YOU KIDDING??? Mrs. Cohen had EVERY right to do that. Smoke Signal is her domain! The seniors were abusing their power and deserved to be punished. How can you support immature students over accredited adults. Shame on you!

      • First of all, some people were holding up papers such as the Wall Street Journal, Mercury News, etc.

Also, Cohen does not own the papers after she distributes it. She has no right to take it back. Troll harder bro.

        • Obviously a freshman, he is also trolling seniors.... and trying to seem legit by having msjtv in his name. Needs to stop being buthurt about the fact that freshman lost ( which btw happens almost every year)

  • I know that as a junior, my opinion isn't going to be taken seriously on a junior class critique, however I really feel that this review didn't give enough recognition for the best parts of our homecoming. We had really cool and funny characters, a boys' booty that was beyond amazing, and we really made an effort to make our skit original unlike the common cheesy skit that most classes produce. I know that this review reflects only one perspective of the juniors, but it also in a way represents the school-wide opinion because it is the only review with the school's name on it that will be read until the yearbook is published. For that reason, I think the writers of the review should have been more thorough so as to include a balance of good and bad, not just a bunch of bad and a few good points.

    • Please keep in mind that the Smoke Signal also publises a more thorough review in the print issue that comes out at the end of the month, so this isn't the "only review with the school's name on it that will be read until the yearbook is published". The online reviewers are under extreme time crunch, so some missing points are understandable. I think we should wait for the actual print issue to come out before we start judging.

  • I'm a senior and I thought the juniors did great today! The ivy and the skyline was definitely a nice touch. However I felt the backdrop was bland, it was only black, white and gray shadows. I was expecting it to look more like a movie poster. Their three hip hops airbands were really amazing. I don't blame Alex's airband, it wasn't their fault that the music malfunctioned and what else could they do but come back and finish it? They put a lot of work into it. Jason's hip hop with some contemporary was also really creative, especially with the wigs LOL. Tessa's was great too. I loved the guy's dance with the shake-weights. Cheerleading, colorguard, and jazz was a little off though (one of the girls in jazz had her nipples almost showing).

The characters were very vibrant and the skit was easy to follow. I did enjoy the plot (the sophomore was hilarious!). The tiger was cute too. Also good choice for ending airband song! :D

    • ALSO if your color is black and you're doing a hip hop airband, you can't really expect it to look all that different.

  • I feel like the juniors performed better than this review made them look. How could you say that the airband had lack of pride when the technology failed? Put yourself in their shoes and see how u would react. Sure they could have done without the body gestures, but when they came back out the second time it really showed persistence!

  • And the senior harassment STRIKES YET AGAIN.

"Those were great, but the backdrop and posters on the amphitheatre didn’t meet my expectations. The backdrop was a bit too simple for my taste, and the posters seemed to be sloppily done."

-How dare you criticize something you have no part in making. Why do you insist on harassing underclasses??

"Speaking of dark, did you get a look at those airband costumes? They all looked the same, black shirts and more black shirts, and some with writing that wasn’t easily read by the audience. And so were the airbands—they all seemed to be hip-hop and nothing else; some variety would have helped."

-ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? The costume designs were great. I actually don't think I've seen better. The designs were so much better than the togas you senior bullies wore. How is this constructive criticism at all?

"However, one of the airbands didn’t really show true spirit when they left the stage after a technical difficulty."

-What is defined as "true spirit"?? Is it being a senior? How dare you accuse us of not having "true spirit". we have just as much spirit as any class!

"we can’t wait to see what they’ll do next year."

-What a shameless attempt to hide the fact that SENIORS wrote this article and that they wont even BE HERE next year.

Overall I am appalled at the gall the smoke signal has to release YET ANOTHER horrendously insulting review. In fact I think the seniors of Smoke Signal have really pushed it today....For those of you who don't know, smoke signal staff were caught HANDING OUT SMOKE SIGNALS DURING HOMECOMING so that the seniors could "read them" and be disrespectful. Due to these recurring cases of harassment and insulting I have decided that I WILL complain to Mrs.Cohen and the Homecoming committee.

Homecoming is supposed to be about competing, and choosing the best class. When Seniors are allowed to create biased reviews and commentaries it gives them an unfair advantage in the competition and ruins the whole point of homecoming!!!!

    • My favorite was:

"-ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? The costume designs were great. I actually don’t think I’ve seen better. The designs were so much better than the togas you senior bullies wore. How is this constructive criticism at all?"

    • okay seriously, stop trolling. We juniors don't need your defense, because we know that we gave it our all and we're proud of the work we've done. This review is solely one way of looking at our performance, and it just represents the facts of what the journalists observed, mixed in with a few subjective ideas blended in here and there. But we can accept this review as honest journalism, and leave it at that. It doesn't reflect senior superiority, as you shamelessly put it, but rather a journalist's perspective. So let's try to make an effort at being unified, and quit harassing the writers of these mini reviews.
