As always, the US. dominated the medal table at the 21st Winter Olympics in Vancouver. American athletes took home 9 gold medals (behind Canada’s 14 and Germany’s 10) as well as 15 silver and 13 bronze. With a total of 37 medals, the US has the most medals of any other country.

Skiing

Already on the first day of competition, Hannah Kearney and Shannon Bahrke earned gold and bronze medals, respectively, in women’s moguls. Medal favorite Lindsey Vonn won gold and bronze in the downhill and Super-G alpine skiing disciplines, while her teammate Julia Mancuso won two silvers for downhill and combined. For men, Torino disappointment Bode Miller redeemed himself at Vancouver with gold in the combined, silver in the Super-G, and bronze in the downhill.

Short track speed skating

Apolo Ohno returned to the Olympics for a third time to earn silver in the shocking 1500m final, with J.R. Celski nabbing bronze. While he was questionably disqualified in 500m, Ohno also earned an individual bronze in 1000m, and he and Celski, along with Simon Cho and Travis Jayner, brought home bronze in the 5000m relay. For women, Katherine Reutter earned silver in 1000m and helped win bronze in the 3000 relay.

Speed skating

Shani Davis earned the American’s sole speed skating gold medal at Vancouver in the men’s 1000m, also earning silver in 1500m. His teammates earned the US silver in the team pursuit, with anchor Chad Hedrick taking bronze in the 1000m.

Snowboarding

Shaun White swept away the competition to win yet another gold medal in men’s halfpipe, while Seth Wescott also earned his second consecutive gold medal in snowboard cross. For women, 2006 gold medallist Hannah Teter won silver at the halfpipe, with 2002 gold medallist Kelly Clark earning bronze.

Bobsled

While Erin Pac and Elana Meyers won bronze in the two-woman bobsled, it was the men’s leading four-man team, piloted by Steve Holcomb, who shone at Vancouver. Holcomb and Co. earned US the first gold medal in their event since 1948.

Figure Skating

2009 men’s singles World Champion Evan Lysachek narrowly defeated Russia’s Yevgeny Plushenko to win gold, the first American to do so in over a decade. In women’s singles, while Mirai Nagasu was no match for South Korea’s unbeatable Kim Yu-Na, she skated to an impressive fourth place finish at her first Olympics. In ice dancing, newcomers Meryl Davis and Charlie White earned silver, beating out the original frontrunners form Russia as well as US veterans Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto.

Hockey

After tearing up their qualifiers, the women’s team made it to the gold medal round, but finished silver to Canada. The men’s team, though defeating Canada in the qualifying rounds, played a tough game in the gold medal round but ultimately lost out in overtime, winning silver.
