Critics may call it a franchise full of excess and extravagance, but that obviously hasn’t hindered adventure seeking fans from making Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes number two at the box office.

Holmes (the charming Robert Downey Jr.) and his faithful partner Watson (revamped by Jude Law) are an amusing partnership to watch as they engage in continuous battles of brains and brawn. All  while, racing to prevent Lord Blackwood’s (Mark Strong) diabolical plans of tyrannizing England and taking over the future from ripening into reality.

Said to be a mix of Fight Club and The Da Vinci Code, Ritchie’s overworked film may not satisfy fans of the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories in the same way it does the younger generation of special effects and action adoring teens. Ritchie essentially thrusts the legendary detective into a modern light, reinventing Holmes as a bare-knuckle boxing, eccentric and quick-witted genius with an unkempt action-figure swag much unlike the Holmes portrayed in the series.

At the same time, without dear Watson, Holmes would be incomplete. One of the most delightful aspects of the film is the chemistry and constant brotherly repartee between the two characters. Richie surprisingly succeeds at making Watson a close copy of the original Watson envisioned by Arthur Conan Doyle, instead of giving him a simple-minded sidekick personality as many Sherlock Holmes remakes have done.

A riveting musical score by Hans Zimmer set against 1890s dark and foggy industrial England just adds to the nicely aged theatrical ambience of the film.

Although it was at times busy, confusing and laden with repetitive fight scenes, Downey’s strong performance added a touch of comedy throughout that made Sherlock Holmes, if nothing more than, absolutely entertaining.
