Madfish is the new opened Japanese restaurant located next to Sweet Tomatoes at Gateway Plaza. Furnished with a stainless steel bar, and three plasma screen TV's, the restaurant manages to make its decor neither unattractive nor unique.

Despite the average interior, the appearance of the food was amazing. The crispy kaki appetizer (fried oyster) was an explosion of color heightened by decorative red and green oils. The chicken katsu-don (rice bowl) featured extremely thin pieces of dried fish that curled and uncurled because of temperature variations and making the dish look as though it were breathing. Its too bad that looks aren't everything when it comes to food though.

The appetizer had a crunchy coating which contrasting well with the soft oyster inside and managed to taste good as well . The main dish, chicken katsu-don, didn't live up to reputation this delicious fried appetizer however. It was savory  though not too salty, but had horrendous texture. The feel of the breaded chicken was just a step up from Costco food. Seafood ramen also looked great, with hot red and some green seaweed and onion, but it tasted like it looked: red hot. The seafood ramen was so spicy that it lost its taste- something Japanese food should not do. The complementary miso soup also failed as it did not circulate and instead settled at the bottom, indicating that the miso was either low quality or wasn't mixed properly.

The kalbi bento (short ribs) won back some points, because of the excellently marinated ribs that pulled together a great balance between salty, sweet, and spicy. Then came the Madfish Special sushi roll. It also had incredible texture and flavor, going from slightly salty and crunchy at the top to soft and sweet crab meat in the middle, to a great finish of sushi rice, crab, and avocado at the bottom.

Madfish is a good restaurant when it comes to presentation, but the quality of the taste and texture is not consistent. Paying just a little more attention to every single one of their dishes could turn this average restaurant into a great one.

All appetizers are under $9 except for the sashimi platter. The kastu-don was $13 and the kalbi bento and Madfish Special were $16 each.
