Newark Memorial High School went into lockdown after police found a teen near campus with a gun at around 1:45 PM, according to Newark police Commander Bob Douglas in a video report.

An officer was conducting a security check when he discovered a group of juveniles. When the officer attempted to contact that group, they fled in the direction of the school. The officer called for helped and they detained three juveniles, one of whom was armed with a loaded handgun. Three others reached the school, and the police cautioned the school to issue a lockdown. A perimeter was set up around the campus and SWAT teams were called in to do a precautionary search. There were no shots fired.

According to Newark Memorial Junior Amy Hoang, most of the students were calm while some were gossiping or trying to gather info on the situation. Former MSJ student Peter Gao said, “When they told us it wasn’t a drill, everybody became more excited and no longer stuck to lockdown procedure. I’m glad everyone was safe.”

Hi there. I was just checking out the your newspaper (which is fantastic by the way) and I came across this article about my school's lockdown from September 30th. First I would like to correct something about your article. We went into lockdown about ten minutes after 11:00 in the morning; 1:45 was when SWAT members started escorting classes to the Events Center. Also, in case you didn't know, the other two detainees were students from my school and were merely ditching class.
That is all.
Keep up the good work! :)
